As you all know, I have been hinting at a secret for quite some time. I never gave any really clear clues or anything. But as of this moment, everything is about to change. Brace yourself…

Ready for it?

It may not seem like a HUGE change to you readers, but to me, it is life changing. As of today I have decided to step out on my own with Edison Photography and my division from Edison Edge and open my new business. It has nothing to do with any harsh feelings, brawls, competition, fighting - NOTHING LIKE THAT so don’t get thinking that and starting rumours. Krista and I are still the best of friends and I have millions of thanks still owing as she has taught me so much in this business. Without her I don’t think I would have the confidence to go out on my own.

This change is what I feel at this moment in my life is the right thing to do and something I am very passionate about. Krista will keep Edison going on her own – with fabulous staff of course, and I will be running Elizabeth Kaye. Elizabeth Kaye? Who’s that you ask? Oh, well, that’s me! Sure, you all know me as Beth Smith, but in actuality my full name is Elizabeth Kathleen Smith. Elizabeth being the longer version of Beth and Kaye being a shortened version of Kathleen - and Smith – well Smith is just too common so it got cut.

I’ve always loved my full name, but Beth was just what everyone called me and I got used to it (you are still welcome to call me this! It’s a short form – nothing wrong with that!). I’m a fashion photographer. I want my name to be memorable and different. If you had a last name like Smith you would totally understand (sorry Dad!). I didn’t want a stage name, and that’s not what it is. It IS my name and I feel it truly represents my new venture.

With Elizabeth Kaye I am planning on taking fashion to the next level. I want to shoot with a more risky style and I am working towards that. Being at Sheridan has inspired me to take risks and to be different and that is what I intend on doing. My style is obviously the same and has that “edge” to it – but I’m working on a newer, matured Beth. Elizabeth Kaye.

So as of today, you can now visit my new website! Sean Allan (the most amazing web guy ever!) and I have created this site to truly portray Elizabeth Kaye….okay, so I totally didn’t mean to rhyme there.

But you know what else rhymes? The new website!

I'm really excited to let you all in on the secret. I've been working on it for quite a bit of time now and can't wait for you to see.

I don't really feel hints are that necessary. I'm bad at hinting. I make them far too obvious and to be honest I'm not a patient person. Guessing takes patience and if I dont want to guess - I don't want my online readers to have to go through the torture either. So really, you can make up whatever you want...

About a year ago Allison mentioned how she'd always wanted to travel and had a dream of perhaps going to Australia to attend teachers college. At the time, I thought this was brilliant and I was totally jealous if it were to ever happen... good idea until dreams became reality.

What was i thinking??

Now my big sister has left to go live in Australia for 10 months and though I am so excited for her and the experiences she will encounter, I'm sad my big sister won't be here every day when I come home.

We've never spent more than a few weeks apart so its slightly heart breaking to think about it. I know it will be difficult at times but thank goodness for the internet i think it will make things easy :)

If you know Al, (i feel sorry for you if you dont... he he) you know she is the most fun person ever to be around. She's always the one to get everyone laughing and her personal hobby of finding mullets of every kind is rather amusing and hilarious! She has a voice of an angel and should be famous... and has a big heart that she pulls out when needed. I love this girl more than anything and know she will have the most amazing time in Australia.

She emailed me today and has arrived saftely and is sitting on her balcony with some cold drinks from 711 - living the dream. It's normal to hate on the big sis and love her at the same time right?
Looking forward to visiting her this July - exciiiiiting!!

City Sirens CD Release Party

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing a new up and coming band! As much as it is fun to photograph a big show with lots of light - its so inspiring for me to be surrounded by driven people new to the industry with dreams of hitting the big time. I love people that reach for their dreams and try their hardest. People who are able to push just a little bit harder each day - whether they are seeing progress or not. DREAM BIG! That is exactly what the City Sirens boys have been doing - and it's paying off! These young talented boys from Hamilton (woot! woot!) have been doing exactly this and I was pleased to snap some shots at their cd release show. Everyone there was so pumped for them and it was truly a great night. You can check out their myspace and spec article written the day of the show.

So when I first met Krista, I was new in the field of photography. I had a digital SLR but.... focus? What was that? I literally knew nothing except how to use my eye. I was experimenting, shooting friends for fun, trying to come up with ideas... really needing direction. It was like Krista came out of no where. She met me - we had coffee, she saw my work and she asked me to assist a wedding. Really? Me? Oh goodness.... was I nervous. But it was like the best first date ever.

From then on, any time I had a question I would ask and she would help. Anytime I needed to borrow a piece of gear (now thats trust!)she would assist me in lending it. Anytime I needed a coffee date because of a stupid boy or just needed a hug I knew I could count on Krista. It was like that - instant bonding.

The rest is really history. She has inspired me to be the photographer I am and has helped me define who I am and how I shoot. She has taught me things about my camera, about life, about guys, about love, about cooking (ha ha just kidding), and has made me want to cherish my family even more than I already do. Her personality is infectious and it can also be displayed through her beautiful girls, Madi and Eden as they are just a bundle of joy.

So the Jeffersons are pretty much the cutest family of life, hands down.
Last weekend I shot some photos for them of the girls and family as I know how important photographs are to Krista. (I mean come on the lady has been setting up a tripod and self timer for family photos!!) It was the least I could do and I think from now on, I am going to take more because when it comes down to it, who wouldn't want to take pictures of these girls? UM CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if you knew these girls - you would totally just fall in love with them. They are SO smart, their favourite past times are reading books and dressing up. Eden cannot hang out with me without wanting me to do her makeup. Madi gives me just enough hugs to warm up my day. They BOTH say the most RANDOM things and I could not even tell you how many dinner conversations have been interupted out of pure laughter after Eden thanks God for "the cup to be nice. Food to be nice. My fork to be nice".....LOVE HER!

Think back to when the sun was shining (and warm!) and the word snow seemed miles away. Think back to the lovely Megan and the fun shoot we did in T.O! Fast forward 5 months, add in some siblings and there ya have it - my latest shoot with Megan, Ashley and Jesse.
Sure, it was cold, okay thats an understatement - it was absolutely freezing (AND i made them take off their coats) mwahahahaha!
Despite this fact, we had such a great morning at Dundurn Castle and I think they did a fab job.
I loved their interaction - it was totally the cutest thing ever.

The Wilson Girls!

My good friend Leah has been one of the best Edison Edge promoters - always sending out word of the business and making me look good ;) Don't know what i'd do without her. Shes one of my "top models" as she's always game to do anything and everything. I love that. I feel a little sassy sometimes and Leah allows me to bring that out in my photos.
Well thanks to her, her cute cousins Kaitlin and Jayme wanted to get some photos of the two of them - and some with their cute as a button mom Kelly (love her!).
It was a rotten day but we totally made the best of it and got some fun shots of the girls!!
Thanks for letting me capture you girls, i had a blast and am loving the Wilson's family even more!

It's a Twin Thing.

I for one can totally relate to that quote, being a twin and all. But the best part? Madison and Kayleigh grew up with Sarah and I. We've known each other since junior kindergarten. Cute huh!?
It's funny to look back and to think of all the times in elementary, middle and high school that we shared. There are far too many memories to name on a blog entry- I could seriously go on forever.

Now all of us in post secondary and moving into our careers, we have remained close and get together often! I love these girls. Madison and I always called ourselves the "brunette twins" because brunettes are clearly cooler ;)
just kidding. kind of.

I was thrilled when my lovelies booked a shoot as I knew they would make my job easy - did you SEE how beautiful they are??
With my girl Amanda behind the scenes - we had the best time capturing the twin connection. A little too much fun actually.
and yes it was FREEZING outside - my girls are tough.

Hamilton Beauty - no seriously!

So recently I was shooting a school project for "texture" and ended up at the punchbowl on Hamiltons mountain. I went to the cross at the top and just stood there for a bit - took a deep breath ( its not so bad up there! really!) and was amazed by the now becoming dull fall colours and clouds and mild November air - surprisingly. When i turned around and looked at the cross I saw a caption that read "Smile ur watched". I've seen this before but for some reason it gave me a shiver. It was a good feeling. Love that its on a cross and that I was reminded that through everything, God's there. It was sweet.

"For the Nights I Can't Remember"

It was the song that really moved me during this show. I watched from behind the curtain as the Hedley boys played the slow ballad in my hometown of Hamilton.

It felt like only yesterday they were playing at the Underground (the smallest little venue here in Htown) and i had my dinky point and shoot snapping tons and tons of photos of the boys. A lot has changed since those days, and it really hit me hard at that moment. A tear just MAY have grazed my cheek - and im talking small tear, more like a moist eye...im emotional okay? All i could think was, "How cool. How freakin' cool." I'm so proud of them. Seeing how far they have come in such a short time is so inspiring to me. They never stop pushing - I love that.

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to shoot the photos for the guys again on Monday, and despite some regrettable lens issues (lets not get into that...) i managed to get a few photos i liked. I blame the lights for the cool pics - they make everything amazing.

Hedley Mania!

So it is a new rule that whenever the Hedley boys are in town - I do their live photos (way too fun). The show this year was just jam packed with amazing lighting, both albums performed, some sweet cover tunes, cool outfits and well... the boys. It feels like not long ago I was in the audience at little venues such as the Underground surrounded by MAYBE 100 people...now 4 years later - I looked out to see THOUSANDS of people in a sold out theater all screaming for Hedley. Insane. Breathtaking a little.

To see a band who I knew had the potential to be huge, actually have achieved that is way too cool. With two sold out Massey Hall shows (the same weekend as Madonna being in town I may add..) I am so proud of these guys. They work their butt off - and it shows. I was honoured to photograph both a Massey show in Toronto and a Hamilton show and capture their awesomeoness, haha!
In the next blog entry, I will post some Hamilton shots as it was only last night and I have yet to edit them, but for now - I leave you with some of my faves from Massey Hall!

If you have yet to go to a show - i suggest going. It's totally fun, audience involved and quick paced.. and the music's not bad either! ;)

Thankful Day

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I realize I am a day late on this as I wanted to wait until I had some photos to post along with the greeting.
Every Thanksgiving we go to my cousins house in New Market and brace ourselves for the BEST meal ever (No i'm actually serious.. none compare to my aunts cooking skills). My aunt made a 30 pound turkey, a ridiculous amount of mashed taters, perfect stuffing... oh man, i could go on... lets not forget her deserts and pies of every kind. mmmmmmm.

Mom, Dad, Sarah, Allison, Lee, Grandma and I all took the trip to New Market and of course I had to bring along my camera to capture the most important thing in my life and what I am most thankful for - family. :)

Trash the Dress

..Okay, so maybe we didnt TRASH the dress - but it was too nice to trash so we just took the shoot to a different kind of TTD session level...okay so maybe we didnt do that either.
alright, alright! we just made the background a little grungy... or some of the shots.
Maybe this shoot should just be called "Make Ashley look gorgeous in her one yr old wedding dress with a somewhat trashed background"..
yep that sounds more like it!

Ashley is a good friend of mine who actually (keep this on the DL) used to be my teacher *gasp!* ... hot teacher you'd say? I would have to agree.
Ashley was such a great sport - i shot this for a school project and took a little more than needed, perhaps. She was so amazing at taking direction and not laughing. I love that. She also was great at keeping her eyes open in bright sun and honestly, i was super impressed with her modeling skills. Amazing!
I went alongside Julia and shot lots of photos that I'm very happy about. I hope you enjoy, take a peek at my faves!

Well finally, it's happened! A GUY booked a shoot - and I was so excited because I always photograph beautiful ladies, but men? Never. (Chad being an exception, but his wasnt exactly "modeling") So i was stoked to photograph Drew for his acting portfolio. Krista and I shot his sister Laura's wedding this summer and met the lovely Drew. He was such a sport about the whole shoot - so organized. We picked out some ideas and clothing and went to town... he drove all the way from Sarnia to be here - dedication, folks! Love it. He was so great at taking direction and we had loads of fun finding the nasty grungy parts of downtown hamilton. Thanks Drew, for a great day.

Trainlight LIVE @ Yorkfest 2008.

Well, it was only recently when I posted photos of the Trainlight boys, calling them the "band of the week". As ive gotten to know these guys, I love them ever more. All of them are so sweet, and really care about people. I love that best. They asked me to photograph their appearance at Yorkfest this year, as they won a battle of the bands contest to open the show. It was their best show yet, so awesome - if you haven't checked them out yet.. uhm, come on! GET ON IT!! I love when I get to do a second shoot of someone. It allows me to understand the person more, and also know what they like and don't like. I love to be given a second chance at capturing who they are, and bringing out new things in them. I was excited to do Charity's family photos again, but this time with her brother and sister as well! The photos were done for her mother, as her sister Crystal is moving away, and the love between them was great to see. They are all very close. Charity is a photographer as well, and so I do find that a little intimidating, but she allowed me to feel confident with her strong words of encouragement as usual. I don't shoot very many families, so it was a nice change! Thanks for a great shoot with your siblings and children, and thanks for letting me capture them!

So, it's been a while since I've posted, but unfortunately it is because school has taken over my life. I guess I shouldn't say "unfortunately" as im actually really enjoying Sheridan. Ive met some great people and learned some sweet stuff, already!
I will post some of my recent school work in a few entries or so (I need to catch up), but until then, let me post some photos from Nicoles shoot a couple weeks back. This was Nicole's second shoot, but first shoot as "edison edge" and she did amazingly. Such a fun girl to work with, full of life and ideas and laughter. Sarah, yet again, did some stunning makeup, and made Nicole look even more stunning than she already does.

The big 1-9!

So I know I have been brutal with updating the blog - and truth is I have just been so busy this past month.. preparing for college, saying goodbye to friends who are leaving for school, working, and celebrating sarah and my birth (does this mean im now an adult???). That thought is scary - but I have to say it is exciting.
The best part of the birthday celebrations were the random and thoughtful flowers, the friends, the first legal drink, Madison and Eden jumping on me in my doorway and singing "happy birthday", the cute underwear (thanks annie!), the DQ ice cream cake, Marie's cupcakes, and the GREAT times. On Tuesday we spent our birthday at Endzones with a table full of friends. On Thursday the girls hit up Philthy McNasty's and on Friday a couple of us headed to Toronto to party with the T.O gang (and Chads parents)! I can honestly say it was such a fun week.
I did not get around to posting these photos so I thought I needed to get around to that.
So as I had to say goodbye to summer, and begin college, I want to leave you with some photos we took before all the fun began!!

Alycia - the model

Well not suprisingly, Alycia has been hired by a modeling agency in Toronto! This was soo exciting to both of us - and since our last shoot I was getting antsy to do photos of my glamorous girlfriend again. Modeling four looks - we did some photos against a white wall and had tons of fun! Thanks to Sarah's (my twin sister) makeup skills, and Alycias already-there beauty, we got some really glam shots!

Rochelles 19th Birthday!

Last week I was lucky enough to shoot Rochelles birthday bash - with a pre-bash shoot with her girls! They were so much fun and you could see how much they truly care about eachother. This is always inpsiring for me to see and reminds me how important my girls are to me. It also made me want to see "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" even more than I already wanted to. (Which by the way was FAB! and highly recommended).

The cottage!

I meant to post those blog earlier this week but things have been crazy!!
Last weekend I was fortunate enough to get some time off and head to the cottage in Tobermory for a weekend. It was a great time to relax, catch up with my summer friends, read in the summer sun (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a summer favourite!) and just hang with the family. I had such a great time!

First off, some sunset and landscape photos i enjoyed.

This to me shows my cottage in a way i like to see it. peaceful. calm. This photo reminded me of the Notebook for some reason!

Band of the week

So I've decided I LOVE the band Trainlight. They are amazing! I went to Chads show a few weeks back because I had already been in Toronto doing a shoot and I decided I would take a couple pictures of my friends and I at the show. Chad always does such an amazing job at his shows - but this show was better than expected. These 4 young guys get on stage while we all were chatting away... then it started. Our attention was quickly drawn to the young guys blasting out wicked licks and sounds of maturity beyond their years. I immediately pulled out my camera to get a couple shots - the lighting in the venue was worse than terrible but I came out with a few shots I liked. Most are of Christian - the singer, and i appologize to the other guys for this - I was just playin around and promise next time to snap more!
Thanks for inspiring me with your music, I'm hooked!

Alycia is one of my good friends and quite possibly one of the most stunning ladies in my life. I love this girl - we've grown up together and I've always thought she should model. I was so excited to shoot some photos of her - and she did such a great job! Our girl Amanda also came along for the fun and was a great little assistant! We went to the Hermitage in Ancaster which was super cool to shoot at - loved the broken down brick and iron fence!
Im forcing Alycia to be a famous model - end of story.
