Learning to See

Thursday, November 13, 2008

One of the things I always tell people about photography is it is all about learning to see. We ALL see a bride and groom - but a good photographer will also see that one moment, that look, that squeeze of the hand that lasts but a second. Photography is so much about learning to see and be aware.

My friend Diane sent me this - ad it reinforced that idea to me. Learning to be aware.

Enter Tooth Fairy

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Today, finally, Madi has lost her first tooth. She has been waiting for this day since she got her teeth I think! ha ha! She has been anticipating it soooo much. She could not be more ecstatic. As soon as it was out (with a little help from dad) - she called her "BFF" Zoe and one of her sets of grandparents. Then she called my sister and left a message saying "I lost my first tooth - call and tell all your family. I already called Grandpa and Zoe but if you could call everyone else that would be great." love it!

She left a note for the tooth fairy asking her to write down names of kids who have and have not lost teeth. (eeks!) And Eden left a picture she coloured for the tooth fairy. They're pumped.

Anyways, here's a picture of my big girl!

Bell Arte

Friday, November 7, 2008

As I told you recently I changed from Pictage being our online gallery to a new one. In plain English - before we used Pictage - clients would view their images, order and Pictage would print and ship them. I never saw them. I was unhappy with this as I could not guarantee quality control.

I also felt like I was giving in to the Big Box mentality rather than supporting our local businesses. Blah - hate that. So - I'm happy to say I'm back! I loooove Belle Arte who is now back to doing all our printing! Yeah!

Belle Arte is a family run business and one of the few places left on earth that has customer service. You go in - and they not only know my name, but my kids. They ask about my kids and my life. They know me. I'm not just a number. And it's not just me - whenever I'm in there, each and every person that walks in is greeted by name. It's amazing!

This week in the Spectator they had a front page article - an amazing story! - on how Robert (the owner of Belle Arte) reunited two brothers who never knew the other existed! Simply because he listened to their stories, knew their last names, recognized faces... it was incredible!

So... if you're in the Hamilton area - check these guys out. I think the are the best - at printing AND at customer service. And if you need gear - even if they don't have it in, they'll get it in for you. Let's support our local businesses!

Our Family

Thursday, November 6, 2008

Every Mother's Day I ask for the same gift. One thing.

Family Photos. I want everyone - including mark who hates getting his picture taken to snap a few photos. Yes, Mother's Day was 6 months ago... but better late than never. ha ha!

I am reminded why people need to hire photographers - it's frustrating! Yes, I was able to get a couple photos - but not without feeling totally frazzled and frustrated! What a different expierence this would be if someone else was taking the photos and we just needed to concentrate on interacting and loving. Next year...

Without further ado... here's my family!

As my friend Monica said - this next photo is your typical facial expressions of both big and little sisters - ha ha!

This is how I caught Madi and Mark standing as I dug out my gear...

And then Eden had to join in...

And I tried to get some of each girl - as you can see one of my girls loves modeling. The other one loves tormenting their mother by not cooperating - ha ha!

Fashionista

Monday, November 3, 2008

In the spirit of random posts (see the one below) - I had to also add this!

At Adam & Erin's wedding their bridesmaid Holly had designed and created some super cool purses and the shawl she wore outside. I loved the purses (the bride and some of the gals were using them) and want one of the shawls... and had to share her talent with the world....

Isn't this shawl/wrap thing amazing?

And here are three of her purse creations...

If I remember right this one was leather - really soft!

Anyhow - just came across these photos again and thought I'd share!

Krista at Work

Recently as I looked through wedding photos from a recent wedding - I came across a photo Beth snapped of me as I set up a photo.
I started an album in Facebook called "KJ @ Work" where I post a photo of me doing my thing that someone snaps and I have found in my archives... and then the photo I was taking at the time. People seem to be enjoying this "behind the scenes" look... so I thought I'd share with my blog readers too!

Oliver - the groom here - is a giant. Okay, not a giant... but very tall. So I stood on this abandoned van we found to get this angle of Oliver with his groomsmen.

Also at Oliver the Giant's wedding - here I am saying to t he wedding party to look like they're having fun as they decorate the car all up! Although - if you look at the pic it looks more like I'm yelling at Tali - the bridesmaid here.

From today's wedding - here I am freeeezing outside!! They have each other to keep warm - ha ha!
We did a 5minute photo shoot outside as the sun was setting and it was getting cold!!

Sometimes, I'll back up after I'm done a photo - and am surprise to find there is a person right practically on my shoulder! ha ha! Here is a groomsmen who could get the little guy in the next photo to laugh and smile so easily!

More to come........

Happy Halloween!

Saturday, November 1, 2008

Halloween is such a great holiday! I love seeing whole communities coming together to celebrate... candy! Seriously, to think everyone gives up one whole evening to help kids have a blast for no real reason is so cool!

Our girls had a blast both at school celebrations and tearing around our neighbourhood tonight. Here's a few quick pics!

Catwoman Madi

Cheetah Eden

Eden's JK class where I spent this morning. Her teacher is wonderful! I love that she laughs and enjoys teh kids so much. We'll really miss her when her mat leave starts in three weeks!

Madi's grade one class where Eden and I spent the afternoon. She too has a super amazing teacher. I love her teacher because she creates a fun, relaxed atmosphere for the kids to learn - but still has control of the class. She's always laughing and the kids all adore her!

This is the only photo I got of the parade - I held teh door for a good part of it and then when I got outside caught Eden as she tried to make a break for the playground - ha ha. But I love this one of the sisters!

Racing each other door to door tonight to trick-or-treat.

Eden's hugs always turn into tackles....

Love the contrast of this next photo with the previous one - ha ha!

"Can we go now, mom?"

And they're off and running!!!

Giving Back

Friday, October 31, 2008

At Edison we are big believers in giving back since we have been so blessed. So I get super excited when I read of others finding ways to make a difference in the world - this is something we're so passionate about here!

Tonight while blog hopping I read on David Jay's blog (David Jay is a super talented photographer and business person I've followed for years - love him!) about his friend who shares a really powerful video on his blog... and is giving $10 to the cause for everyone who comments.

So - what are you waiting for? Go make a difference today.... watch the video (you'll be glad you did), leave a comment, change the world.

THANK YOU!!

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Growing up, my parents had jobs they loved - and I enjoyed seeing that example. Today I too have found a job that isn't work - but a passion! And I love, love, LOVE it!!

So to do something I love... and to be recognized for my work - wow. Much, much more than I could dream of.

This week was a big week for edison. On the weekend we found out we won "Greatest Photographer" in Hamilton by H Magazine.

And today the Hamilton Spectator's Reader's Choice Awards came out and we won the following awards...

-I won awards for best photographer and local artist

-Edison won for best photography studio

THANK YOU!!!

Last year at this time I shared how my goal was by 2008 (which is now) to be NOMINATED for a Reader's Choice Award. So I was completely shocked when we WON not one but FOUR last year (the same three as this year plus New Business also). And then to win three again this year - we are so honoured.

Thank you again and again for your support and encouragement!

Break

Saturday, October 25, 2008

So - it has been a very busy Fall - and this was my first weekend off in.... a long time! It feels so good to just be "mom". Friday was also a PA day for my girls - so we had a long weekend to play! I still have tomorrow off too! What bliss! My dad called me and asked what plans I had for Sunday - and I don't think he believed me when I said none!

Friday afternoon we had a brief visit with two of my good friends - Carolynn & Cherie and their kids. These guys are like family - we have been together through it all. And still love each other - yeah!! Every year we have taken our kids to Puddicombe farms where we let the kids run through the pumpkins in full costume as we snap pics. Become part of our Halloween tradition - so we did this on Friday!

the six kids... My two were a black cat/cat woman (Madi) and a cheetah (Eden). Carolynn's two were also catwoman (Paige) and Chloe made her own rainbow costume. Cherie's kids were a dalmation (Caden) and Cruella De Vil (Aliah). Although we rarely see each other these days - it's always fun to get the kids together.

Paige and Madi are such good buddies!

Goals and Dreams

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

I am a huge dreamer. I have ideas and dreams that could keep me busy 49 hours a day. But being a photographer is only a part of who I am. I am also mom, wife, friend, daughter... and so sometimes I may have a great idea or dream - but it is not the right time for it to happen. I've been mulling over this though lately. You see, I take time off from shooting in end of November and December and while we are busy fulfilling Christmas orders, I am also taking time to restructure and dream through the business.

And so along with dreams come goals. If you've been a blog reader for awhile - you may remember last year I said one of my coals was by 2008 to be nominated in the Hamilton Spectator's Reader's Choice Awards. So of course I was shocked when in 2007 we were not only nominated - but won in 4 categories (New Business / Photography Studio / Photographer / Local Artist). Curious about the 2008 results? Check in here on Thursday - hee hee. Nothing beats suspense.

Some of my other goals....

-shoot a wedding in Tuscany - or thereabouts - really, I'll take anywhere in Europe! or Canada... or the US... or I just love to travel. :-)
-enter photo competitions regularly
-find ways to give back

and there are many others but I just wanted to touch on the last two (and the Tuscany one I keep throwing out there in case someone knows someone - ha ha! I'm pathetic)

I was intrigued by a photo competition I saw tonight when I was doing my daily blog hopping. To go off on a tangent for a moment... I love blogs. I read about a gazillion different ones using bloglines. Photographers from all over the world - both the "Big names" and the ones just starting out. I love seeing what people are up to, what photos they are taking, and glimpses into their lives. And because I love blogs so much, I try to keep mine up to date and as active as possible in case others are as addicted as I am to blogs. I am a stalker on most sites - I go and read and leave... never making myself known. I think I'm going to set a new goal in also trying to comment more. I know a two way conversation is always more fun than a one way conversation. So - I wonder if you, my lovely blog reader, would also try to enter in to conversation with me? You'll find I don't bite and I love to gab! Feel free to comment anytime. Or if the blog scares you - look me or Edison's group up on Facebook and drop us a line! This also allows you to comment on individual photos - and more importantly for us to become friends. :-)

Tangent over. ha ha

I saw this competition on Roel's blog and I love it for a couple reasons. It benefits Thirst Relief - how cool is that? And photos that place in the top ten have feedback from some of the world's top photographers on why it makes a great photo. When I did some workshops and such - one of the things I loved the most was the feedback and critique. This is how we learn and grow!!

Anyhow - for all you photographers out there - this looks like a great one to enter!

So check out WedComp!

Jodi

Thursday, October 16, 2008

Recently I had the absolute pleasure of having a photographer from Winnipeg - Jodi from "Photos by Jodi" - fly out and job shadow me for 4 days. Jodi does this once a year with different photographers- what a great way to learn! I may steal the idea. Anyhow, always a bit curious what someone will be like when you've never met them before and they're staying at your house - but right from the start Jodi was great! She was a lot of fun!

This is what Jodi said about her time here: "I LOVED every moment of my time in Hamilton with Krista and her family.I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to spend 4 days with them. Krista is the most down to earth and casual person I think I've met. If you haven't had your pictures done by her yet....BOOK HER! HAHA you'll never regret it! You'll fall in love with her just like I did. Thanks Krista for all the advise with editing, shooting, marketing and everything else photography. Blessings on you and your family!"

We did some photos of Jodi for her website while shew as here - let me introduce you to the lovely Jodi:

Fashion Tips from a 6 year old

Today is school picture day for my kids. So the question is asked - what should they wear???

Now, I've always tried to dress my girls cute - my sister has always said "If you wouldn't wear it - why should they?" Good philosophy.

But more recently I've given up the battle a bit. Eden wants the girly, glitzy, gaudy clothes. Madi wants to look like a teenager rock star. At night I lay out a cute outfit for each of them. In the morning they refuse the outfit and put together some tacky clothing choice of their own. I'm realizing this is part of their personality - so let it go. I still try to steer them a bit in their choices - but it's mostly a losing battle.

But today is in fact picture day. I told the girls for one day they had to wear what I wanted. I got them both into a cute dress each. Madi wore her black dress with the embroidery I love so much, and Eden wore a cute green wrap dress that I love with her eye colour! So, I thought all was well with the world of fashion for my girls.

Then, as I walked past Madi's classroom this morning after popping in the school for a minute - I had to laugh out loud. Madi had out fashioned me again! She had smuggled in her backpack a clip on boy's tie from our dress up box and was now wearing it. And you know what? I love it .I hope she keeps it on for the photos as it is totally "her". The cute dress is a reflection of me and my tastes. The tie - that tells more of Madi's story and personality.

Got me thinking about my own clients as I'm often asked "What should we wear?" It's great to coordinate colour schemes, and avoid clashing.... but I think even more fun is to let the kids personalities shine through!! Even if we start coordinated and in mom's choice of attire - and then change to kids choice.

Next week Beth is doing our family's portraits... now I'll have to rethink what they should wear. Watch next week to see who wins the fight of the closet - mom or Madi!

Have Camera WIll Travel

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

I adore travel. Love traveling. It's in my genes I think. Be it in a town an hour or two away to a town that is new to me - or to an exotic faraway country. I love seeing new sights and meeting the people that make up the culture!

And today I was thinking how I often get the comment "I wish you lived here and could do our photos".... from people outside of the GTA and Hamilton area. Just a reminder... I'm willing to travel! Be it for a wedding or for portraits - no harm in asking if you're interested! For family portraits, I like to try to get a few portrait sessions booked in the area if I am coming out. So if you are thinking you'd like me to come to your neck of the woods for portraits - get some friends together who also need portraits - and let's make a day (or two!) of it! If it is for a wedding - just ask! Especially for a destination wedding where your guests are limited - you especially want to make sure you get quality images you love to share with all those who could not attend your celebrations.

And so that is my thought of the day. Have camera. Will Travel.

:-)

A dozen years of thanks

Monday, October 13, 2008

This weekend was the usual whirlwind of thankfulness as we celebrated with our family!

Friday night we drove out to my parents place in the booming town of Sweets Corner. We enjoyed way too much food and played some games and had a blast. The girls enjoyed what will probably be the last crop of lollipops from Grandma's lollipop garden this season. Saturday I was at a wedding all day - what a great day! Sunday we headed to another big town to visit my one set of in-laws - the town of Clifford. Holidays at the farm are always crazy as Mark's side of the family is huge (he's one of 11 siblings) and there are cousins and nieces and nephews and siblings everywhere. The kids had a blast in the barn swinging from the rope swing and playing in the hay and climbing in the tree fort as well. Today the four of us went to Webster's Falls for a hike. I have never seen it so packed - wow!! But the colours could not have been more amazing and the weather perfect. I'm so glad we went as it was breath taking. Then this afternoon-evening my other set of in-laws came over along with Mark's brother and his fiancee. We introduced them to the Wii - what a riot!! We also celebrated Christmas as my in-laws will be heading south (Florida) for the winter in just a couple weeks.

Whew! I'm bushed!

But one thing stood out for me.

Mark's brother Paul is celebrating his engagement to the lovely Simone. And this got me thinking about our own wedding, engagement, etc. and how much has changed in the nearly twelve years since we said "I do".

Since we got married twelve years ago...

-we were the first to get married out of all our siblings. Today we have one sister-in-law, four brother-in-laws and another sister-in-law to be that has been added to our families.
-at our wedding there were no nieces or nephews yet. Today we have 16 nieces and nephews - as well as our own two girls! (If you're counting - that is a total of 22 people between kids and inlaws that have been added to our family that we did not even know when we were married!)
-Mark has earned another degree and found a profession he loves (nursing)
-I have started a business that I love and am passionate about - and have even been able to win some awards for doing what I love.
-we have moved 4 times - not including two short stints with my parents in between moves
-we have visited 7 countries and lots of places in between... and are always dreaming of where to go next.
-we still do not own a dishwasher and do not have cable TV.
-we still love Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit
-we still have our list of things we want to do before we die... we pull out occasionally and add to and edit. We love to dream.
-our close friends at our wedding - Pernell, Margie, Monica... are still our good friends today.
-I still am not Martha Stewart or domestic - Mark is so much better than I am in those areas!
-we still love each other like crazy.

So, after reflecting on the last dozen years I'm feeling especially thankful. Not because it's all been a piece of cake - in a dozen years I've experienced much heart ache, loss and sadness also. But as I reflect I see how it has changed and shaped me into who I am today. I see how though circumstances change - I still have the adorable guy I met at the bus stop 15 years ago by my side. I'm thankful for the people in my life - the ones who have been with me through it all - and the ones I have gladly added to my life in more recent years.

Life is such a gift. A glorious gift. I hope that today - on Thanksgiving - and always you will "celebrate life and love".

Happy (belated) Birthday!

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

I just realized I forgot to post these photos here on my blog! On the last day of summer... Sept. 21... my baby girl turned 6! Most people think of their youngest child as their "baby" - but to me my Madi, my oldest is my baby. She is the one I remember so vividly as a newborn - the moment when they declared "it's a girl!" She's the one that taught me how to be a mom and broke me in. She is and always will be my baby. But she's six now... and not enjoying mom calling her "baby" anymore. Sigh.

Madison's name means "gift from God" - and I must say, as each year goes along I realize more and more how she lives up to her name. This year I am thinking what a gift she is to me - how much she has taught me. Madi is very sensitive and feels things deeply. She has a beautiful, generous compassionate spirit. And she makes me laugh - a lot - with her wit and wacky imagination. I love this kid!

Right now she is on a cowboy kick - so we went with a cowboy birthday party. Yee haw!

The invitation...

Madi and Eden waiting for guests - Madi is trying to look serious like a cowboy.

Madi's friends all came in cowboy attire!

The gang!!!

Fall Update

Hey gang! Wanted to take time for a quick update....

---------------------------------------------------------

First - we are nearly booked solid for 2008 portraits. If we are already working to book your session - no worries! Any new inquiries that won't fit in our 2 or 3 spots left will be added to a waiting list in case there is a cancellation.

---------------------------------------------------------

Also - if you have had photos done this year and are interested in custom design Christmas cards or photos for gifts - now is the time to start thinking about that! Just pop us a line!!

---------------------------------------------------------

Tomorrow I am having a photographer from Winnipeg - Jodi Klassen - coming to stay with me for 4 days to job shadow. I am so excited to meet Jodi! I have 4 days of solid shooting planned for us - so watch back for lots of photo updates!

---------------------------------------------------------

I also was thrilled - and shocked!!! - to receive this email from Trina in the Yukon. I thought the only thing I Was famous for was winning a goldfish eating contest back in the day - ha ha.

"I am recently taking a photography course in school and we have to do a project on a famous photographer. You see where this is going.. ha I picked you , i love your photos, they are beautiful, unique and detailed and when i think of a photographer the only name that appears in my head is Krista Jefferson. Now i hope that didn't sound cheesy but really that is the only way to put it."

---------------------------------------------------------

And I got to say, work has been crazy busy - Fall is always our busiest season with portraits, weddings and orders. I have been busy trying to keep up... but then I get an email like this from last weekend's groom, Ted, and it all seems worthwhile:

"I just saw my Wedding photos on your blog and I have tears of happiness. They are beautiful. Thanks for capturing our special day."

---------------------------------------------------------

May you celebrate life and love today!!

Eden's First Day

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Yesterday my baby started school - how did she get to be old enough? She was just born!!

Eden was soooo excited to start school - the SAME school as Madi. Does life get any better? The two things Eden was most excited about was: 1) Having snack at school and 2) When I picked her up she was going to run over to me and say "Mom, can I play on the creative (the playground)?" That is what excited this kid and I'm happy to report but things happened.

Eden was at the back of the line since she was trying to cheer up a friend who was nervous. When Eden's teacher said it was time to go in - Eden bolted it - elbowed her way right to the front of the line. I was a bit sad thinking "that's it?" When I saw her sneak back out, past the principal and teacher and she gave me a big hug, kissing hand and an "I love you". How did she know I needed that?

Eden insisted on wearing a pink highlight in her hair...
She's so darn cute!

And excited!

Madi promised to show her the ropes.

Time to go - excitement is building to a near frenzy!

I know this photo isn't in focus (one on the right) but you can see her at the back of the line on the photo on the left and then making a break for it on the right (she's the blur of hair right behind the teacher)!

And she's off....

Dads

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Today I had two photo shoots - photos to follow soon..... But on my drive home (stuck in a traffic jam gives you lots of time to think) I was thinking about dads.

In too many homes there is not a dad - or a good example of what a father can and should be. I remember in high school realizing that I was in the minority having a loving, caring dad in my life and going one step further - in my home. I am way too blessed with two great parents I adore and I try to never take that for granted.

Today my first shoot was one for a dentist's office for their website. The two dentists had their offices full of crafts and drawings from their young kids. When I asked about their kids, a smile broke out on their faces and they could talk about their kids as if they knew them intimately. Love that! you could just see they adore their kids without their kids even being around.

Then I went to a photo shoot for a 6 month old. I've snapped this family's maternity and newborn photos as well - and let's just say this is one dad who is smitten!! He adores his little guy and wife so much! It is beautiful to watch.

Then I come home to my own Mr. Mom who is such a great dad to our girls. Unbelievably good.

So, I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy about dads today and I come home and was blog hopping and saw this great ad on one of the blogs I read ("Heart of the Matter") that just summed up my day....

Bridal Portraits

Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Tonight I did a bridal portrait session for Kristen who is getting married in a couple weeks. It was so fun!!! I will refrain from posting any unfortunately as I don't want Mike to catch a glimpse!

If you aren't familiar with bridal portraits... basically, the bride gets her dress on after all the fittings are done and does a trial run of makeup and hair... and we do a photo shoot! It is so relaxed and a lot of fun! We have the time to spend to get gorgeous photos we would not be able to on the Big Day - and the photos can be done and ready for the wedding! It also gives the bride a chance to spend time in her dress and veil to work out any bugs.... figure out what's comfortable and if she needs double sided tape or not! ha ha

I also have booked for the Spring a dress and tuxedo fitting portrait session. Instead of an engagement session, this couple wanted photos of each of them on their final fitting. I think this will be a lot of fun!!

I love variety and to hear your ideas of what you want us to shoot!!

How my Husband Tried to Kill Me

Sunday, September 7, 2008

Yes you read that title right.

So, Mark was out on a rare guy's night out tonight while I relaxed at home. I was sitting on the couch shopping online (my friend Lori just introduced me to ebates - now it's tempting me to shop online more!!!). As I sat on the couch, I could smell something in the kitchen next to me. I went in - smelled all around - couldn't find the source and sat back down.

This smell kept getting stronger - a chemically, burning smell. I checked everywhere but couldn't pinpoint the location or source. Frustrated I called Mark to see if he could think of anything I was missing. He asked if I had checked out the cleaning supplies under the sink - I opened the cupboard and had to leave the room as my eyes were watering so bad from the smell.

I was happy enough to have figured out where it was coming from and assured him I didn't need him to come home. Well, I was stumped. Nothing was knocked over. There wasn't much in the cupboard - but I couldn't be within a couple feet of it for more than a few seconds without having to leave again to give my burning, watery eyes a break.

So I did what any independent, strong woman would do. I called dad.

My dad was stumped and wanted me to get this figured out so he suggested I go get one of my neighbours. Before I did that - I had to clean up! Moving some rags in this cupboard, I found it!

The rags were on fire! Not flames - but burning, smoking and BLACK inside this pile of rags. The rags that were right beside the can of spray paint that had the "highly explosive" label and the cleaning supplies.

So - I called Mark back to find out what was on these rags. He had simply used them to test some wood stain. Nothing major. My dad explained to me that it was simply spontaneous combustion. Certain fumes if in a confined space can ignite. He said houses burn down over something as small as this - and people are left wondering what caused it.

I can't even think about what might have happened. I found this at about 9pm. I was heading to bed early tonight - what if I hadn't found it before I went to bed?

Tonight, I'm going to go give my girls an extra big cuddle when I check on them and Mark an extra smack upside the head. Joking. It wasn't his fault. If anything - he'll get an extra big hug too. I'm feeling glad to be alive.

Tonight "celebrating life and love" has new meaning! kj

Beth

Wednesday, September 3, 2008

Beth is the other photographer here at Edison - running Edison Edge... if you haven't checked out her work, you're missing out. She does a lot of what is known as "Senior Portraits". Senior Portraits is still mainly an American thing - and here in Canada when we mention it people think she's going to nursing homes to photograph the elderly. By "Seniors" we refer to high school seniors. Instead of a stiff grad photo - they go and have basically a fashion shoot done. Something to capture where they are at this peak time of life. Beth works to incorporate their style, personality and interests into her photos - and they are amazing. Like out of a Vogue magazine! Beth also photographs groups of friends - usually before they head off their different ways after high school. And she loves photographing bands - either for promo photos - or at concerts, as well as modeling photos. Her photos always amaze me.

And she just turned 19 last week.

I love that age is often just a number... her talent is far beyond her years.

Beth also become a member of our family. Even though we've only known each other little more than a year, she has moved her way into our hearts permanently. My kids adore her and miss her when she's not here. Yesterday when we came home from the first day of school - Madi's first questions was "Is Beth here?" - when I answered no, she looked confused - "Well, why not?"

Yesterday, Beth also had her first day of school - at Sheridan College! We are so proud of her! She will still be shooting on weekends... so make sure to book her fast!

On Monday, we went for a walk at the beach for one last gab session before school. I threw my camera in my purse and we ended up with a couple of Beth shots at the end of our walk! Meet my Beth....

love this girl!

Madi's first day of grade one

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

When Madison started Junior Kindergarten - I was a wreck. Watching her walk away from me into her classroom - it sounds cliche, but it was like my heart was walking outside of me. I felt heartbroken.

When Madison started Senior Kindergarten last year it was a new time of anxiety for me as she started french immersion. What if it's not a good fit? Too hard? What if????

This year Madison starts grade one... does it just keep getting harder??

So many unknowns - what doors does she go in? Should I let her eat lunch at school or bring her home each day? What is her teacher like? Will she have good friends in her class? Mark and I last night (as I was bawling about today) looked at each other and said "Maybe we should home school" - just so we could keep her close to us.

And next week Eden starts Junior Kindergarten... how much more can my poor heart handle?? Sigh. But - I'm proud of my girls - they're wonderful, incredible gals I adore. Here is a few pics of Madi today before school....

Madi wanted to wear her gym shorts taht she wore all summer long - fortunately they were in the wash! Here she is in her new dress - and with her "BFF" (Best Friends Forever) necklace Zoe gave her.

The girls both wanted these cheetah backpacks (because they think they're animal rescuers) - but they are so similar it's hard to tell them apart. So they each have their initial sewn on... Madi loves this bag!

When did Madi get to be a head taller than Eden?

And Madi finding friends in line...

And her good friend Kaitlin dragging her inside...

Friends and Fun

Friday, August 29, 2008

These last few weeks I have been able to see and connect with some of my favourite people. Some planned visits - other complete surprises!

First my surprises...

In an earlier post I mentioned bumping into Kathy. A high school and college friend I adore! We figure it's been about 8 years since we had seen each other - and we just bumped into each other in Toronto! Seriously! I love this gal!

Then at church last week I was shocked to turn around and see my buddy Dave who I had not seen since college - twelve years ago! Also at church was Robin who had also gone to college with us and had recently moved back to Ontario. So we had a mini reunion - woo hoo! Bad pic on my point and shoot - but I just had to post it!

Today I had another surprise visit from a friend - my sister and I took my girls to MarineLand. And we bumped into Carolynn and her family!! Her girls and my girls are tight - so they were in heaven! We all rode a roller coaster together which was fun! Haven't downloaded the pics I took (on the ride) yet though.

Now the more planned visits!

A couple weeks ago two of my closest friends - Carolynn and Cherie - and I took all of our munchkins up to Cherie's cottage for a couple days of fun! It's so nice to have our kids grow up togetehr and enjoy each otehr so much! I only brought my point and shoot so ignore the quality!

The four younger girls playing in the paddle boat

Poor Caden - the only boy with 6 girls and three women!

And then this week I went up to Zurich to visit with my two good friends Sandra and Monica.

Meet Sandra... photographer, mom of 5, and capable of just about anything....

And Sandra's 5 kids...

Bailey

Rachel

Caroline

Victor and Warren

Victor is a year older than Madi and Warren a year older than Eden and the two pairs played together wonderfully. I wanted to get a picture of Madi and Warren... watch the progression of Madi as she slowly cuddles into Warren....

After the photo Madi said, "I hate to say it. But I'm in love with Warren." ha ha!!

We had a campfire with Sandra's family in their backyard. Oh how I love country life! Sitting under a gazillion stars, roasting marshmallow's.... ahhhh.....

Monica and her girls came over - fun to see Bailey (the oldest of all 9 kids present) playing with the youngest - Eliana.

Meet my friend Monica - talented musician, one of the most caring people ever, my encouragement and great listening ear!

Apparently I make her laugh...

Monica has two gorgeous girls - Maia and Eliana. SO fun to see her as "mom"....

Maia and the camera were mad at each other - she cried if I snapped a photo of her! But I did get this one from behind....

And Eliana - well, she just stole my heart with those big eyes! Love!

All in all, it's been great to see some faces I adore and to connect with people again. I love my friends so much - these that I have seen recently - and the many of you that I hope to connect with SOON!

Celebrating life and love,

Krista

Which Princess?

Monday, August 25, 2008

Tonight Madi was reunited with her "bestest best best friend" (as they say) Zoe. Zoe has been in Disney for a whole week - which in kid terms is a lifetime. I think they hugged for ten minutes straight when they saw each other. When do adults lose this? Zoe came to church with us tonight and then the girls had their first sleepover!

On the drive to church tonight I enjoyed listening in on the conversation in the back seat. Since Zoe was in Disney we were asking her all about it. I asked which Disney princess was her favourite. I expected "Cinderella" or "Belle" because she's soooo beautiful but I was surprised by both Zoe's and Madi's answers. Pleasantly surprised.

Zoe - "My favourite is Mulan because she is strong and does karate. When I met her I told her I do karate too and she said we could start an army of girls - just the two of us."

Madi - "My favourite is Pocahontas. Have you ever noticed that she is not in the pictures with the other princesses? She's native and they don't let her. [future activist alert] That's not nice. I don't think she feels loved, so I am going to love her I decided."

In the picture at the top - you will notice neither Mulan or Pocahontas with the Disney beauties. I think while these 6 princesses were getting their hair and make up done for the group picture, Mulan and Pocahontas were off fighting injustice and caring for the less fortunate. ;-) Exactly where I hope Madi (and Zoe) will be too!

UPDATE: Zoe's mom has a radio show and so she's use to researching things that peak her interest. I just got this interesting comment from her on my Facebook note about this entry:

Ok. My job makes me a total research geek. I found out why Pochahontas and Mulan are not pictured with the Princesses. It's because they are heroines and not actual princesses. Both Pochahontas and Mulan are historical figures that have been made into "honorary Princesses" within the Disney family.

Weird but there's actually a reason why these two stand apart from the rest.. a good reason at that.

Pocahontas: Her Story

Unlike any of the Disney princesses before her, Pocahontas is a historical figure not associated with European royalty and so is considered an "honorary" Disney Princess due to her reputation as a heroine and role model. Her fabled life as a noble and brave Native American girl, has largely been fictionalized in various legends, and again her story was altered for the making of the 1995 Walt Disney film "Pocahontas."

Meet Mulan: Her Story

Like Pocahontas, Mulan is an official member of the Disney Princess club -- but she is, in fact, a multi-cultural heroine, not a true princess. She is a brave Chinese woman based on an ancient Chinese myth that's nearly 2,000 years old. Real or not, the 1998 Disney Pictures film "Mulan" retells the story about a young Chinese maiden who wants to honor her family but seems destined to fail.

She puts herself in harm's way when she learns that her weak father is to be drafted into the army to fight the invading Huns. Knowing that he would never survive the rigors of war in his state, she decides to disguise herself as a man and join in his place. Unknown to her, her ancestors are aware of this, and to prevent it, they order a tiny disgraced dragon, Mushu, to join her and force her to abandon her plan. He agrees, but when he meets Mulan, he learns that she cannot be dissuaded and so decides to help her in the perilous times ahead. In the process, Mulan becomes Disney's most feminist protagonist to date.

Q's from a 4 year old

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Questions I've been asked in the last 24 hours by my 4 year old, Eden.

"Mom, what are we having for breakfast for Christmas Eve?" (um... I'm not even sure what we're having for supper in an hour!)

"Wouldn't it be funny if God made me with feet on my arms and hands on my legs so I had to walk upside down?" (the funny part was her demonstrating - or trying to)

"Is this snack peanut-free?" (I love that she is so good about her nut allergies!)

"Don't look, okay?" (No question puts fear into a mother's heart like this one.)

I'm so sad about summer vacation almost being over and the munchkins going back to school!! This Fall will be tough with Madi in grade one - all day every day!!! - and Eden starting kindergarten. Okay - I need to go hug my kids now that I thought about the start of school again....

Trip # 2 of 3

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

So PEI was part one of our vacation... the next leg of the trip took us to Cape Breton Island. We loooooooved it here. So peaceful. The fog and cool air was a perfect fit too!

We spent two nights in St. Peter's to relax before heading out on the Cabot Trail. While in St. Peter's we enjoyed a Busker Festival where we saw the Calypso Tumblers - Madi now wants to be a Calypso Tumbler when she grows up! Here's a clip of them doing their routine on America's Got Talent...

And we watched a boat race of some sort - no idea what was happening but we cheered our hearts out!

And we enjoyed a great beach!

Eden insisted on being called "Beach Girl" - this photo suits her new name.

And finally - on to the wonderful, majestic Cabot Trail!!!

And my dream home (seriously!)

And we went whale watching - wow! We saw some Minke Whales and then Pilot Whales (which are like Killer Whales). The Pilot Whales were so close - at one point I had on my zoom lens and I couldn't get them all in as they were just too darn close! And we saw a momma whale with it's baby... so sweet!

And some views from the boat...

Apparently they'll let any ragamuffin family on the whale watching boats... wow! We look ROUGH!

The kids loved Joe's Scarecrows.... a little creepy but fun!

And as soon as we drove off the island the rain clouds rolled in and it started to pour - for two days. So instead of our usual lodging (our tent) we stayed in a little cabin. A nice break!

Oh! And I have to show Mark's McLobster sandwich - so funny!

And my lucky charm I found!

Trip# 3 of 3

Monday, August 11, 2008

And the third leg of our trip was Quebec City - which we LOVED. Okay - I know I said that about PEI and Cape Breton too - but each place is so incredible and unique. We really loved them all!

We started out at these cool waterfalls....

And, my kids who are scared of everything... had no fear on the suspension bridge!

Then we were off to old Quebec City! I felt like as we entered the walled city - we were entering into a different country - somewhere in Europe - and a different era. It was wonderful!

Entering the wall...

My kids were terrified of the guards!

Scenes around old Quebec...

And then one of the highlights of our trip! The parade of the giants celebrating the 400th anniversary of Quebec City! First of it's kind in North America - and I have to say... this parade was amazing!!!

Then on the way home we gave the kids a big surprise at McDonald's! Carolynn and her family were driving to Montreal as we were driving home - so we met part way for lunch. Our girls had been really missing each other and had a great time playing!!!

And here are Carolynn and I miles from home - and so happy to see each other!

All in all, it was an amazing family vacation!! Then after one day at home we headed to Mark's sister's wedding... Ill post that tomorrow!

Celebrating life and love,

Krista

Red White and PEI!

I'm back!

Well, two weeks vacation goes by quickly!! I'm now back to reality and working my way through a pile of emails! I'm grateful for Beth, Carolynn and Jen who did a ton while I was gone though!

When I left you last I had just finished shooting Darryl and Laura's wedding.. the very next day we started on the Jefferson family adventure! Mark and I packed the girls and headed East! I knew Mark and I would love the East Coast, but worried that the girls would be bored and that the drive would be horrid. I was pleasantly surprised by how well the munchkins traveled and how much they enjoyed the Maritimes alongside us. We had a blast! I think they really just enjoyed mom and dad having concentrated time with the fam! No computers or distractions!

Here's part # 1 of 3 of our vacation... Prince Edward Island!!!

We started the trek - lots of driving but with stops here and there to let the kids run and play it didn't seem so bad!

Madi looking for frogs...

Running free after sitting so long...

Eden practicing her own style of karate...

Madi swimming at a campground...

Finally we arrived in PEI! We loved the beach, uncovering sandy treasures, and lighthouses!

I love Madi's response here to the ocean - how can we not but stand in awe - and realize just how small we are?

The girls loved playing on this sandbar!

So - I may have forgot to pack proper bathing suits. Whoops! I mean - we're just going out to the ocean... ha ha!!! Rookie move, Krista.

This is a "during" and "after" photo...

The girls loved the jelly fish...

But the best part was just running free!!

Here is Madi at the very end looking for seals...

We loved the lighthouses! (more of them to come!)

And on the ferry ride off of the island... Madi was so excited about the Ferry!!

And I was so excited about the live music on the ferry!

We loved PEI - although I was surprised how touristy it seems now. Maybe because it is so small and condensed. But it is still gorgeous with lots of natural beauty and gentle pace of life!

Jasen is from New Generations Photography in California. We met online a few years back - both Canon users - woo hoo! He has become a good buddy and it's great to have someone like him to bounce ideas and questions off of! It was fun to met Jasen and his wife in person last year at WPPI! ~ Krista

How did you meet Krista?
Online baby! Actually through Photography.on.the.net

What do photographs mean to you? Why are they important?
They can capture and HOLD feelings for a lifetime. They can tell a story even better then a video if you ask me.

Photography tip for the photographers who read my blogs... or for clients!
Be yourself in front of the camera and also behind the camera. If you are the client, let things happen freely. If you are the photog, get on the same level as your client and you will become best friends!

Any random facts, funny stories - photography related or not!! - are welcome! I know that Krista has explored the Grand Canyon and got some beautiful images. I once gave her a ride to a Vegas airport! She has GREAT friends and I know she cares abut everyone she comes into contact with. She has a very "giving" soul. Guest Blogger: Sandra Regier

(Note: Krista is on vacation from July 27 - Aug. 9. In that time there will be guest bloggers to keep you entertained and enlightened!!)

Krista says: Sandra is like a breath of fresh air. She has so much joy and life in her! She is an amazing woman - mother of 5 kids, volunteers in her church and community, runs a busy photography business and savours life to the fullest. I love Sandra! In a short time she has become a close friend and fellow traveller. Here's a glimpse into Sandra's thoughts....

I don't believe for a minute that Krista & I met by chance. I'm so thankful that God lead us both down a path that intersected. Krista's very close friend, Monica Joy - moved to my hometown of Zurich. Once I got to know Monica and she found out I was a photographer she said again and again - "You have to meet my friend Krista". One day when Krista was up for a visit with Monica I asker her to pop by for a visit. At that time, Krista was just getting started taking family photos and believe it or not folks, I'm pretty sure she hadn't shot her first wedding yet. I seemed like the "ventran" having been in business for more than a year... what a laugh now! We hit it off instantly and since then Krista & I have been growing our own businesses side by side, each in our own way - if only the distance wasn't a factor I'm sure we would have joined forces long ago!! We are always sharing ideas and growing pains, and having lots of fun adventures along the way..... which leads me to my next topic......

Travelling with Krista.... 2 years ago I had this crazy idea... I wanted to go to Vegas to WPPI. I kind of said something off the cuff to Krista and she said "Sure, let's go"..... I was like "seriously???" and of course she totally was. Before I knew it the tickets were booked and we were on our way. I owe Krista a big giant THANK YOU - I would have NEVER gone without her. It was an experience in which I grew so much, both personally and also in my business.

I had flown before, but I had never been on a connecting flight before that trip - I know, sounds strange, but I was a little nervous abou the whole thing. Krista assured me it was no big deal that she'd been flying her whole life. She was so relaxed that I was quickly over my fear of airports. You see, Krista is the most relaxed traveller EVER.... however, warning to those who travel with her.... she is relaxed to the point of not knowing where she left her ticket (and possibly yours) - and not being overly concerned when it's the last bording call and she is still uploading images to facebook. Not kidding folks! However once you actually arrive at your destination she has gone above and beyond to check out the best deals for cars and hotels online and also any near by attractions that might be worth checking out. She is a blast to hang out and makes sure to break in every hotel room with her traditional "jumping on the bed" photos. Adventures with Krista are always tons of laughs, fun and new experiences. I always look forward to our next big adventure....... not sure when it is yet, but I know it will be great just the same.

To all of Krista's friends a clients - you are so lucky to have her involved in your events and lives to celebrate life and love with..... I certainly know that I am blessed simply by knowing her!
